Sims Bayou Greenway from MLK to Scott

In January 2017, Houston Parks Board replaced an asphalt trail from Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to Scott St. as part of Houston Parks Board’s Bayou Greenways Maintenance efforts. The trail was brought up to the Houston Parks Board’s 10-foot wide concrete standard. Following the completion of the project, amenities such as benches, trash cans and recycling bins were added along the new trail.

Improvements to this greenspace and surrounding intersection include a small, concrete parking lot with solar lighting, seating areas, picnic tables, trash cans, recycling bins, signage, secondary trails within the greenspace, native plantings, and widened, paved, crosswalks on both sides of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

On April 30, 2022, Houston Parks Board – along with Mayor Turner, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and others – celebrated the opening of this new 10-foot wide hike-and-bike trail along Sims Bayou from Glenbrook Park to I-45.

This new greenway picks up where the existing Sims Bayou Greenway left off, at Glenbrook Park, and heads west along the bayou’s south side, adjacent to the Houston Botanic Garden. The greenway then heads north across the bayou using a former golf cart bridge HPB refurbished and continues along the north side of the bayou to connect to a new trailhead at River Drive and the I-45 feeder road.

After exiting the trailhead, the greenway crosses under I-45 and connects into an existing greenway that ends near Reveille Park.

Please be advised that additional work is needed for the trail connection under I-45. When construction is expected to begin, a noticed will be posted here and on HPB’s interactive map.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Sims Bayou Greenway from Martin Luther King Boulevard to FM Law Park

Houston Parks Board began construction in July 2022 on a 2.27-mile Sims Bayou Greenway segment between Robert C. Stuart Park and FM Law Park in southeast Houston.

The greenway begins at Stuart Park, where the existing Sims Bayou Greenway currently ends, and travels along the north side of Sims Bayou adjacent to Reed Road. At Reed Road, the greenway splits into a 5-foot wide concrete walking path on the top of the bank and a dedicated bike lane on the road utilizing the lane closest to the bayou.

The walking path and bike lane merge together again at Stewart Park to continue as a 10-foot wide concrete trail along the bayou. The greenway makes an undercrossing at Mykawa Road and its adjacent railroad, then continues along the top of the bank connecting to an interior road of FM Law Park. Several hundred feet down that road the trail begins again and connects to the existing pedestrian bridge, traveling over Sims Bayou, and ends at FM Law Park on the south side.

Notable new features of Sims Bayou Greenway include connections into three City of Houston Parks, Robert C Stuart Park, Stewart Park and FM Law Park, a scenic 5-foot wide walking path between the east  end of Reed Road and Stewart Park, a separated bike lane on Reed Road between the east end of Reed Road and Stewart Park with a concrete, raised curb, striping and signage, and a street-level connection to Swallow Street and under-street crossing at Mykawa Road and the adjacent railroad.

This work is expected to conclude in summer 2023.
