#ParksByYou Day 2020

#ParksByYou Day is all about improving the habitat along Houston’s bayou systems. On February 22nd, along two different sites on two different bayous, volunteers will work to establish the groundwork for healthy, native prairie and forest habitat to grow in areas of need.

The Greens Bayou Greenway Coolgreen Corridor site offers volunteers an opportunity to scatter seeds and plant tree seedlings in an ongoing Houston Parks Board restoration project. This process of planting a prairie reduces erosion while young trees are reestablishing. This site has no extensive walking but volunteers should be confident walking on uneven surfaces and planting at ground level.

The White Oak Bayou Greenway Watonga Parkway site offers volunteers an opportunity to plant seedlings and spread soil along Watonga Parkway adjacent to White Oak Bayou. This prairie planting will support a nearby bat colony as a food and habitat source. Many rescued plants will be returned to the site in addition to new native grasses and forbs.

Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather. Closed-toed shoes are required, and a reusable water bottle is recommended to help cut down on event waste. Tools and refreshments will be provided and volunteers need to be 16 years of age or older, unless accompanied by an adult. All minors are required to turned in a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. For new volunteers, please indicate that you are “registering for #ParksByYou Day” on your registration form.
