HOUSTON PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

The City of Houston directly manages the Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD). HPARD stewards and manages over 39,501 acres of parkland and greenspace for the City of Houston and develops and implements recreational programming for citizens of all abilities.

HOUSTON PARKS BOARD

A nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing access to quality parks and greenspace in the Greater Houston region, Houston Parks Board creates, improves, protects, and advocates for parks for everyone. Since 1976, the organization has utilized public-private partnerships and its extensive philanthropic, government and community relationships to improve parks large and small. Houston Parks Board is currently leading the transformational $220 million Bayou Greenways project to complete a 150-mile network of connected parks and trails along Houston’s major waterways.

In light of its 501(c)(3) status, Houston Parks Board raises funds in furtherance of its mission to support parks for everyone. In keeping with 501(c)(3) best practices, the Houston Parks Board is governed by a Board of Directors. Board Members are approved by Board vote, upon recommendation of the Board’s Governance and Nominating Committee.

HOUSTON PARKS BOARD LOCAL GOVERNMENT CORPORATION

Pursuant to Chapter 32, Article VIII of the Houston Code of Ordinances, The Houston Parks Board LGC is a Local Government Corporation (LGC) created by the City of Houston  to  manage conveyances and acquisitions for public parks, among other related purposes. The LGC may also solicit funds, gifts, and bequests for park acquisitions, additions, and improvements in the city, as well. The LGC works for and is monitored by city officials who must approve its budget, sign off on projects with public funding, and appoint its board members.

The Local Government Corporation is composed of up to 20 members who are appointed by the Mayor of Houston and confirmed by Houston City Council. Meetings of the LGC are open to the public and are held at least twice a year. For more information on the City of Houston’s boards and commissions, click here.
