Mason Park Renovation

Phase II Fundraising Underway

The goal of the Mason Park "Plaza Viva" renovation is to revitalize the western-most parcel of Mason Park which was significantly underutilized due to lack of amenities. The amenities requested were passive in nature, including the creation of a neighborhood gathering area for community socials and a place for the elderly and young to leisurely enjoy the outdoors. The Project includes construction of a 25’ diameter gazebo, plaza, walkways, two fountains, lighting, and site landscaping.

Status

The Houston Parks Board has completed Phase I of the Mason Park renovation project in conjunction with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Phase I included installation of the 25-foot diameter gazebo, plaza and walkways. The gazebo and sidewalks will serve as an attractive and safe area for families to gather and grandparents to stroll with their grandchildren or pets. Additionally, the gazebo will provide a picturesque wedding portrait site, a place for parties and receptions, corporate gatherings, and a meeting place for artists to play their instruments.

Fundraising is now underway for Phase II improvements which will polish off the project with site landscaping, Colonial-Mexican style fountains, plaza expansion, lighting, site furniture and trail expansion. The pavilion remains available for naming for a gift of $250,000. The fountains will create a sense of tranquility and lend to the Spanish Colonial theme for the project, and are available for sponsorship (with plaque) for a gift of $25,000.

Bench sponsorships and engraved pavers are also available - see brochure for more information.

Collaborative Partners/Major Funders

The Mason Park Project was initiated by the Mason Park Advisory Council and the East Lawndale Civic Association, who saw the need for a place such as this and came to the Houston Parks Board to make the dream come true. Major Contributors include Houston Endowment, City of Houston, Council Member Carol Alvarado’s birthday party fundraiser, and Oak Farms Dairy.
