The Houston Parks Board is pleased to partner with the Friends of the Lee LeClear Tennis Center, Inc. and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to renovate the Lee LeClear Tennis & Learning Center. Opened in 1973, the Lee LeClear Tennis Center was the largest public tennis center in the US. It is still the primary public tennis facility in Houston. All major public statewide tennis tournaments and local tournaments are played at this facility and it is heavily used by local schools and the general public. After 45 years in operation, the Center is in need of a renovation.

The Lee LeClear Tennis and Learning Center is being renovated in three phases which are described below:

Phase One:

Through a project managed by the City of Houston General Services Department, the Center’s old asphalt parking lot was replaced with a new curbed, concrete parking lot. Accessible ramps and signage, as well as LED lighting, landscaping and entryway improvements were also included in the $681,797 Parks Capital Improvement Project. This phase was funded through bond funds and Parks and Recreation Department Dedication Funds. The project was completed in March, 2016.

Phase Two:

The Houston Tennis Association provided funding for the resurfacing of 26 courts.

Parks Consolidated Construction funds in the amount of $204,000 are available to replace the court lighting with LED lights. The project will be underway soon.

Phase Three:

Phase three will include the demolition of the existing building and construction of a new Tennis and Learning Center. The new building will house the staff that runs the Center and tournaments, provide space for educational programs such as the National Junior Tennis Program, and include a community area to host community activities. Also in this phase, we hope to include construction of a new drop off zone in the parking lot, modification of the sidewalks, a new practice wall, new fencing and new windscreens. Funds for this phase will come from funds raised by The Friends of the Lee LeClear Tennis Center, Inc., a 501 c3 non-profit. The project will be managed by the Houston Parks Board.
