2016 will mark the 100th Anniversary for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The department was created by city ordinance on March 15, 1916, and was called the Department of Public Parks. Its duties were to manage approximately 750 acres of park land, which included Sam Houston Park, Hermann Park and Woodland Park. Today, the department oversees the operation and management of 370 parks and greenspaces totaling 37,859 acres. It provides recreational services for all ages and abilities through its many park facilities, including: municipal golf courses, tennis centers, pools, community centers, trail systems, and recreational programming.
The evening’s event will honor the many individuals, public entities, organizations and businesses who believe parks create a sense of community and a better life for all and have made the park system’s growth possible with their support.
